Summary

Calendar year 2005 (CY05) financial results for forty-two Asia-Pacific (AP) service providers were largely disappointing. Revenues rose 5.5 percent to $287.4 billion, but operational expense (opex) grew faster, up 7.3 percent to $181.8 billion. Average net margin-i.e. net income divided by revenues-declined to 11.4 percent from 12.9 percent in 2004. Growing revenues while keeping costs in check remains an imposing challenge, especially in wealthier markets. The key question many carriers face is, now that they have spent bundles of cash on next-gen equipment, when will revenues materialize from the next generation of services?
