Summary
This document studies the development of copper access networks over the past few years. It analyzes the changes in usage and portfolios and highlights the main trends that affect fixed-line operators. Furthermore, this study provides an outlook for the future of the copper network in the European consumer market. This outlook includes forecasts for consumer usage of and spending on fixed telecom services in general and copper based services in particular.
"Although the trend towards more fiber in access networks will accelerate over the coming years, copper will remain the main final fixed connection medium in Western Europe for the foreseeable future," said Jan Hein Bakkers, research manager at IDC. "To make the most of these copper assets, operators need to adapt their portfolios to the goals of maximizing value and loyalty per customer."
