Summary
Industry unwired
Displaying the characteristics of an industry in decline, industry revenue has fallen sharply over recent years. The local industry is not alone however, with European, Asian and Oceanic wireline telcos all feeling the effects an evolving telecommunications landscape. Growth in substitute products, in particular wireless products and services is a significant detriment to this industry. With no let up in sight, a growing proportion of the population view wireless phone as their preferred means of communication.
This industry covers all management operations involved in the provision of direct communication services such as local, long distance and international calls utilizing a range of telecommunications infrastructure including landlines, microwaves and satellite linkups. The provision of VoIP services are excluded from this industry report. Industry participants own, operate and maintain this infrastructure including switching and transmission facilities. The industry also includes those management operations involved in the provision of non-voice telecommunication services including telegraph. It does not include those management units involved in the provision of wireless telecommunication services or those that provide wired services utilizing the infrastructure of other carriers (i.e., resellers). It also does not include those entities that utilize cable infrastructure for the provision of television programs.
