Summary

IP connectivity in the IP connected home is slowly gaining steam. MultiMedia Intelligence felt that several conditions needed to be in place for a successful IP connected home ecosystem. We identified these conditions to be the availability of IP content aggregators, streaming video codecs, centralized network connectivity, and reliable wireless protocols.

There are any number of emerging consumer electronics devices that make a splash onto the market. But even as devices blaze and fade in popularity, and the world is going through an economic slowdown, perhaps the true revelation is that "convergence" is here.

By 2013, MultiMedia Intelligence projects over 244.5 million internetenabled consumer electronics will be shipping annually. We provide this caveat - while there will be a swelling of IP-enabled devices, connectivity in consumer devices will exceed actual utilization. One of the focuses of this report discusses what is happening in hardware and how consortia are developing platforms for ubiquity between devices using different IP interfaces (which are also forecasted in the report).

"A Roomful of Strangers Visit the IP Connected Home" is so-named because there is a perceived hunger to bring Internet-enabled video to the television, and relatively new set-top box manufacturers that are attempting to stake a claim. The Internet video to the television market is problematical. In spite of heavy promotion and the availability of products, worldwide, consumers have summarily rejected the idea of PCs connected to the TV.

Moving from a PC-based architecture, there are two approaches that are being tried to bring Internet video to the TV. Digital media adapters (DMA) are set-top boxes that are uniquely designed to decode streaming video. Roku, VUDU, and Mediapoint (Blockbuster's DMA) are examples of new mediums designed for the digital home. A second approach enables legacy STB to play streaming video. Game consoles, IPTV boxes and even DVD player/records are being targeted by content aggregators as ways to get content to consumers.

The report discusses other drivers for IP connectivity, and boldly suggests future applications within the IP connected home. The report segments in-home connectivity by the interfaces Ethernet, Powerline, coax, and Wi-Fi and how they are integrated into consumer electronics.

Other forecasts include worldwide subscribers for broadband, VoIP, cable TV, satellite TV, and IPTV. The associated set top boxes, adoption of network-interfaces by device type, as well as the middleware and interface semiconductors are also included. Device segments include TVs, DVD players and recorders, DMAs, video game consoles, media servers, DVRs and set top boxes.
