The smartphone refers to the multi-functional phone with an open operating system and a CPU, and that has extendable hardware and software functions.
The popular operating systems for smartphones are Symbian, Windows, Linux, etc. The third party developers can develop various applications according to the API provided by the operating systems; therefore, theoretically the applications of smartphones can be extended unlimitedly.
Smartphone, as an important product for the manufacturers to reveal their technology strengths and increase their profit margin, has gained wide attention in the mobile phone market.
In 2005, the sales of smartphones in China were about 520,000 units. The smartphone market will maintain its strong growing momentum in 2006; the annual growth rate will be as high as 75%.
Due to the large demand, high profits, and sound market expectations for smartphones, most mobile phone manufacturers now focus on R & D for smartphones.
Though the market shares of smartphone were not high during 2002-2005, considering the forthcoming 3G era and the increase of mobile phone sales in China, enhancing the R&D for smartphones and increasing its market share are essential for the manufacturers.
