Summary

This report provides an analysis on the leading mobile handset vendors, such as Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and LG, based on the Q1 2007 business results. The report includes an in-depth analysis on the Q1 2007 performance of Samsung and LG, and examines their future strategies in the global market as well as projects the future development of the global mobile market.

Among the top 5 vendors, Motorola posted the worst quarterly operating result in its history with a market share decreasing by 4.8%, which led to the consolidation of Nokia's dominance in the market. Samsung Electronics gained much of the market share that Motorola had lost by targeting the low-end and mid-range handset segment.

The most notable development in Q1 2007 was the emergence of minor handset vendors that have been classified as the 'Other Group' in this report. They, together with Samsung Electronics, succeeded in attracting the former Motorola users, changing the global mobile market. Now, the global top 5 vendors' market share is being threatened by BenQ and Sagem, the 6th and 7th largest handset vendors, Chinese vendors including ZTE and Huawei, as well as Taiwanese ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) vendors who provide handsets for the operators by securing direct orders from them, including Vodafone and BSNL who are operating in the emerging markets.

Research Methodology

For the report, ROA Group has gathered and analyzed various materials released by handset manufacturers and related industries. In addition, some research material in this report is based on interviews with professionals in the related industries as well as ROA Group's own research data base.
