Summary
This study presents IDC's 2005?2009 forecast for Western European camera phone shipments covering traditional mobile phones and converged devices. A review of 2004 performance is presented, including vendor and country analysis, followed by IDC's forecast, which examines future camera phone shipments by device type and resolution for the period 2005?2009. In addition, the market for dedicated digital cameras is briefly examined by way of a five-year shipment forecast by resolution and analysis relating to how convergence in the mobile phone space and end user dynamics in both markets is affecting the imaging competitive landscape.
According to Geoff Blaber, research analyst, European Mobile Devices, "The integrated digital camera has become the most visible illustration to date regarding the progress of convergence in the mobile market. 2004 witnessed the proportion of handsets with integrated cameras grow to 70% of total Western European mobile phone shipments, from just 15% in 2003, illustrating the importance of imaging from high-end smart phones down to basic midrange and increasingly low-end mobile phones. IDC forecasts further positive growth between 2005 and 2009, as high-speed networks and technologies such as SIP and IMS maximize the role of the digital camera as mechanism central to rich content sharing across between IP enabled devices."
Companies Mentioned: Nokia; Samsung; Motorola; Sony Ericsson; Siemens; LG; Symbian; PalmSource; Microsft; Sagem; Kodak
