Summary
The Indian Mobile Services Market was worth $11.8 billion at the end of 2006, with 150 million subscribers making up 14% of the total population.
We anticipate mobile connections in India to reach 600 million by 2011, as the urban geographies of the country reach high levels of saturation including many consumers owning multiple SIM connections. A large portion of this growth will arise from pre-paid connections, driven by increasing affordability of handsets and tariffs amongst India's lower middle classes.
Take-up of 3G connections over the period is expected to be slow, constrained by network coverage issues and affordability of handsets. SMS ARPU is expected to increase modestly due to the network effect of increasing volumes.
