This IDC study provides Western European network interface card (NIC), LAN on Motherboard (LOM), and Mini PCI shipment data for the first half of 2006 and compares it with data for the second half of 2005. NIC shipments are further split by vendor market share and technology. This study also contains a detailed forecast of the network connectivity market in Western Europe for 2006 to 2010 by technology and form factor, as well as historical data for 2005. The network connectivity forecast is segmented into forecasts representing the total network connectivity market in Western Europe -meaning all form factors, such as NIC, LOM, and Mini PCI -and forecasts representing figures only for NIC cards. Country forecasts of network connectivity shipments and revenue by technology, along with total installed base figures, are available upon request.

Countries include Germany, France, the U.K., Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, and Greece. Technologies include 10/100Mbps Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, and WLAN.

"Traditional card vendors should be aware that cards are mainly used in the first phase of the technology development and as upgrades for already-installed systems. This is especially true for demand for wireless cards; by 2010 IDC expects 93% of all add-on cards to be wireless," said Evelien Wiggers, IDC senior research analyst, European Telecommunications and Networking.
