Summary

The wireless industry has witnessed a phenomenal growth in the past decade. Thanks to the rapid evolution of wireless technologies, higher data rate has provided a platform for the delivery of advanced data services, such as Instant Messaging, Video download and streaming, multimedia conference call, m-commerce, etc. Today we are not only able to stay connected through traditional voice communication and text messaging, but with much exciting multimedia communication experience.

This presentation material contains three major sections and provides a comprehensive overview of the current wireless market trends, advanced data services & applications, broadband wireless access technologies, and services enablers.

The first part of this material (Module 1, 2) discusses the trends of convergence in the wireless market and the key drivers behind it. It also introduces new and enhanced data services enabled by wireless broadband access technologies, including IM, MMS, LBS, Presences, etc. At the end of module 2, we discuss valuable lessons learned from mature market, South Korea and Japan, to see what has worked.

The second part of this material focuses on different wireless technologies, including GSM, GPRS, EDGE, CDMA, UMTS, as well as disruptive technologies such as WiFi, Wi-Mesh, WiMAX, etc. We take a look at each technology, including its features and functionalities, evolution path, and the current trends.

The last part of this material gives a thorough look at today's hot topic -IMS technology. Originally developed for GPRS/EDGE network as an evolution path to 3G network, IMS has now been embraced by Cable companies, and fixed line operators in addition to wireless operators. We look at the system architecture of IMS, key network elements, and its pivotal role in the next generation converged network. At the end, we also conduct operator and vendor analysis, and take a look at the current deployment status worldwide.
