Core Forecasts

Figures released in 2007 have continued to show an increase in visitor numbers to Hong Kong. In May, 2,202,343 tourists visited the territory, an increase of 12.6% year-on-year (y-o-y). Cumulative arrivals for the year to date stood at 10,995,014, a 6.7% increase on the same period in 2006. We expect June and July visitor numbers to continue to be robust, as this period saw the celebration of 10 years of the territory's independence from the United Kingdom. As seen in recent years, China continues to send the bulk (55.1% in May 2007) of tourists to China.

Given the robust nature of visitor numbers to the SAR so far in 2007, there is now a clear upside risk to our forecast of 4.5% visitor growth to Hong Kong over 2007 as a whole. We will await the release of figures from the summer months before coming to a final decision on where our new forecasts will lie.
