Tourism Overview

Foreign tourist arrivals were up a buoyant 14% year-on-year (y-o-y) at nearly 8.4mn in 2006. This brings the compound annual average growth rate for tourist arrivals to South Africa between 2001 and 2006 to a very favourable 7.7%. As regards the latest available data for this year, the outlook continues to look sanguine. Data for the first five months of 2007 show that foreign tourist arrivals were up a strong 10% yo-y at 3.7mn, from around 3.4mn in the corresponding period of the previous year. Reports suggest that the hotel industry performed extremely well in H107, compared with the same period last year, with improvements in occupancy rates. Latest available data on the total number of tourist (foreign and domestic) room nights in all accommodation establishments show that there was over 4.6mn nights in Q107, up 3.7% y-o-y.
