Summary

Tourism is the business of providing services to international and domestic visitors (whether on day or overnight trips). "Tourism" is defined broadly in the international standards to include visitors whose primary travel purpose includes business, convention/conference travel, are on government business, as well as the more familiar tourism for leisure/holiday and to visit friends and relatives. The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) evaluates the economic significance of the tourism industry in terms of expenditure by visitors, based on its direct and secondary (or secondary multiplier effects) on industries. The major industries that directly benefit from tourism expenditure include: domestic and international air transport, accommodation, food, services and drinking places, automotive rental and travel agents and tour arrangers. These six industries account for about 61 % of the directly related output of the tourism industry. Other important linked industries, include gambling, cultural events, sports and gas and retail, sales. This report largely concentrates on the major directly linked industries, as outlined above, in analyzing the current and future trends relating to the Tourism Industry.
