Summary

New Construction is The Road Less Traveled

In recent times, the average distance traveled by vehicles has been growing at a faster rate than road capacity in metropolitan areas. Congestion is affecting America's ability to compete globally, since the majority of goods and products shipped in the U.S. are transported on its highways, while the time lost reduces economic productivity and results in higher product costs for consumers. Despite this, the value of maintenance and repair activity on existing roads will exceed the pace of new highway and street construction.

This industry comprises: (1) establishments primarily responsible for the entire new construction of highways, streets, roads, or airport runways (excluding elevated roadways); (2) establishments identified as highway and street construction management firms; and (3) establishments identified as special trade contractors engaged in performing subcontract work primarily related to the construction of new highways and streets (e.g., grading for highways, laying pavement, installing guardrails, public sidewalk construction). Establishments in this industry may subcontract some or all of the actual construction work. The types of establishments operating in this industry include: general contractors, design builders, engineer-constructors, and joint-venture contractors. Establishments primarily involved in the maintenance, repair or renovation of an existing highway or street are including in NAICS industry 23414 Highway and Street Maintenance or 23415 Other Highway and Street Construction Services. This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
