Tightly woven: Rebounding downstream demand and consumer spending will likely boost industry revenue

Synthetic Fiber Manufacturing in the US
The Synthetic Fiber Manufacturing industry, which supplies fiber made from petrochemicals to producers of apparel, plastics and other consumer goods, has struggled due to unfavorable conditions over the five years to 2019. Purchases of synthetic fibers, which are inputs for products such as clothing and home furnishings, are affected by changes in consumer spending and industrial production. Over the past five years, the industry has experienced its biggest challenges from volatile input prices. However, industry profit margins benefited from the substantial decrease in the world price of crude oil despite its high volatility causing uncertainty for manufacturers because it is a key input cost for operators. Demand for industry products is partly dependent on prices of substitute materials such as cotton. Between 2014 and 2016, domestic demand decreased significantly as the world price of cotton decreased. Over the five years to 2024, the industry is anticipated to grow. Demand from carpet mills and manufacturers of industrial products and consumer goods will likely modestly increase, while demand from textile and apparel mills is anticipated to decrease slightly. Furthermore, exports to foreign producers in downstream industries will grow, as manufacturing activity increases in developing economies continues.

This industry produces cellulosic and noncellulosic fibers and filaments in the form of monofilament, filament yarn, staple or tow. Key cellulosic organic fibers and filaments include rayon and acetate. Noncellulosic fibers and filaments include acrylic, nylon, polyester and spandex. This industry does not include fiber, yarn or thread mills, thread manufacturers of any other fibers or manufacturers of hemp yarn.

This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
