Grease lightning: An expected interest rate hike will likely encourage more consumers to seek out repairs

Abstract

Auto Mechanics in the US
Operators in the Auto Mechanics industry provide mechanical and electrical repair and maintenance for a variety of vehicles, including cars, trucks, vans and trailers. Over the five years to 2019, the industry benefited from consumers and business increasing frequenting industry establishments. This is largely due to rising disposable income levels and corporate profit during the period, which enabled more consumers to forego do-it-yourself repairs and enlist the services of industry operators. However, rising income levels carry the threat of consumers opting to replace their older vehicles rather than repairing them. Over the five years to 2024, industry growth is anticipated to slow, despite continue growth in disposable income levels enabling more consumers to frequent industry establishments.

The Auto Mechanics industry provides mechanical and electrical repair and maintenance for cars, trucks, vans and trailers. Operators include self-employed mechanics, auto repair shops, garages and car care centers. This industry does not include car dealerships, auto parts retailers or gas stations that provide industry services. Industry services do not include auto bodywork, car washes, oil changes or air conditioning repair (IBISWorld reports 81112, 81119a and 81119b, respectively).

This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
