The overall number of broadband subscribers in New Zealand has increased steadily in recent years, though at a slower pace in line with higher market penetration.

The principal growth areas have been in the mobile broadband and fibre sectors. This trend will continue over the coming years as the ultra-fast broadband service sees greater uptake among consumers. In line with faster broadband connections, the volume of data carried over these networks has also increased rapidly.
The uptake of mobile broadband is being bolstered by the expansion of mobile technologies based on LTE and is being supported by the Rural Broadband Initiative rollout which is adding a large number of mobile cells to new or underserved areas. Vodafone New Zealand, with Nokia as partner expects to roll out 5G services by the end of 2019, ahead of Spark and 2degrees.
