This IDC study focuses on voice over LTE (VoLTE) and voice over WiFi (VoWiFi), both of which are services provided by mobile network operators for making calls on mobile phones, generally referred to as "mobile voice." "VoLTE is inevitable for European mobile operators, but timing is a critical decision," said John Delaney, associate vice president, IDC Europe Mobility Research. "By moving their 4G customers from circuit-switched voice to VoLTE, mobile operators can achieve progressively greater cost savings in the short, medium, and long term. And once VoLTE is under way, a relatively small additional investment in VoWiFi can bring substantial improvements to customer experience. In this study, we examine what is needed to deploy VoLTE and VoWiFi as well as the benefits of doing so. We also analyze the positioning of operators' IP communications services in comparison with those of over-the-top (OTT) service providers. Lastly, we provide case studies of European operators that are currently getting to grips with the deployment of VoLTE and VoWiFi."
