Airports Vanuatu Ltd (AVL) is undertaking the Bauerfield International Airport Upgrade project in Vanuatu.

The project involves the upgrade of runways, lights and cables, the relocation of domestic terminal building, the rehabilitation and resurfacing of 2.6km runway, the extension of aprons, the construction of additional taxiway, the widening of existing taxiways, the installation of air traffic control equipment, air navigation systems, weather monitoring equipment, secure communication and security equipment, improvement of power supply, and the evaluation of aircraft rescue and fire fighting (ARFF) capacity.

AECOM New Zealand Ltd has been appointed to prepare environmental and social management plan under PAIP.

Tonkin + Taylor International Ltd (T+TI) in association with Opus Consultants Ltd (Opus) has been appointed to provide the design consultancy services for the project.

On May 8, 2015, the World Bank approved US$59.5 million International Development Association (IDA) credit for the VAIP.

On June 3, 2015, the Vanuatu government signed IDA agreement with the World Bank to improve the safety and efficiency of its aviation sector for Vanuatu’s three international airports namely Bauerfield International Airport, Santo-Pekoa International Airport and Whitegrass Airport. The arrangement was declared effective on July 9, 2015.

Also an agreement was signed with the Pacific Regional Infrastructure Facility (PRIF) to grant additional US$300,000 funds.

In January 2016, the agreement signed with the World Bank in 2015 was stalled. However, the World Bank is in the process of reviewing the loan.

On February 16, 2016, Fulton Hogan Ltd was awarded the contract to conduct emergency repairs at the airport first runway. The runway repair works were completed by May 7, 2016.

The Vanuatu government is seeking the World Bank loan worth US$1.2 million.

In August 2016, the Vanuatu government had signed a deal with the World Bank of US$59 million.

On November 1, 2016, The Government of Vanuatu (GoV) issued a tender to appoint a contractor to undertake second runway upgrade works with last submission date of December 19, 2016.

The GoV secured a loan worth US$1.2 million from World Bank.

On May 13, 2017, a joint venture (JV) of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and Northwest Civil Airport Construction Group (NCACG) appointed as contractor.

Construction works are expected to commence in July 2017.

The project involves the upgrade of the Bauerfield International Airport in Port Vila, Vanuatu.

The US$25 million project includes the following:
