Summary
Denmark’s construction industry regained growth momentum in 2018, with output expanding by 5.7% in real terms - up from 3.3% in 2017. Consequently, the industry’s output value - measured at constant 2017 US dollar exchange rates - increased from US$41.7 billion in 2017 to US$44.1 billion in 2018. Growth during the review period (2014-2018) averaged 6.2% a year, and was supported by public and private sector investment in infrastructure, energy and residential construction projects.

According to Statistics Denmark, the country’s average construction production index at 2015 base prices grew by 4.1% in 2018 and 4.5% in 2017. Moreover, the construction production index for civil engineering grew by 4.3% in 2018 and 4.6% in 2017.

The industry is expected to continue to expand over the forecast period (2019-2023), however, with a decelerating growth rate. The industry’s output is forecasted to register growth rates of 3.3% in 2019 and 3.1% in 2020. Growth will be supported by investment in commercial, infrastructure and renewable energy projects. The industry’s output value in real terms is expected to post a CAGR of 2.94% over the forecast period. Consequently, the industry’s output value is expected to rise from a value of US$44.1 billion in 2018 to US$51 billion in 2023, measured at constant 2017 US dollar exchange rates.

Accounting for 42.4% of the industry’s total value in 2018, residential construction was the largest market in the Danish construction industry during the review period. The market is expected to retain its position over the forecast period, with a market share of 39.4% of the industry’s total value in 2023. Infrastructure construction accounted for 16.3% of the industry’s total output in 2018, followed by commercial construction with 15.7%, energy and utilities construction with 14.7%, institutional construction with 6.0% and industrial construction with 4.8%.

The total construction project pipeline in Denmark including all mega projects with a value above US$25 million - stands at DKK490.2 billion (US$77.6 billion). The pipeline, which includes all projects from pre-planning to execution, is skewed towards late-stage projects, with 59.3% of the pipeline value being in projects in the pre-execution and execution stages as of August 2019.
