Sterlite Industries Ltd (SLT), a subsidiary of Vedanata Industries, is undertaking the expansion of Tuticorin copper smelting complex project in Tamil Nadu, India.

The project involves the expansion of existing plant to double the capacity from 400,000TPA to 800,000TPA (tonnes per annum).

It includes the construction of a water desalination plant, a refinery, a sulphuric acid plant, a phosphoric acid plant, and a captive power plant with a capacity of 160MW with two units of 80MW each.

In January 2009, environmental clearance was issued for the project.

In 2009, a petition was filed in Madras High Court by the environmental activists opposing the project.

In September 2010, project was placed on hold after Madras High Court issued the stay order and ordered SLT to close the Tuticorin Copper Smelting Complex.

SLT has filed a plea against the stay order issued by the Madras High Court to the Supreme Court of India.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) has been appointed as EPC contractor for the power plant of the project.

In June 2013, the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) permitted SLT to resume activities on the proposed expansion.

In November 2015, SLT requested for extension of the validity of the environmental clearance to five months and was approved by Ministry of environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC).

In May 2017, SLT secured environmental clearance.

In November 2017, SLT secured approvals from Vedanata board of directors.

Project is facing delay due to opposition from local communities.

The project involves the expansion of existing plant to double the capacity from 400,000 Tonnes Per Annum (TPA) to 800,000TPA in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, India.
