Summary
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SDOT) is undertaking the upgrade of I-385 through the interchange area and rehabilitate portions of I-85 in Greenville, South Carolina, the US.

The project involves the complete expansion of I-385 to six lanes from south of Woodruff Rd to the north of I-85, construction of 10 bridges, rehabilitation of two existing bridges, modifications to the substructure of a bridge. The project also includes construction of auxiliary lanes and ramp pavement on I-85 between Pelham Rd and I-385.

On July 30, 2013, SDOT issued a request for qualification (RFQ) for design and build contract.

On September 9, 2013, SDOT selected three teams – a joint venture of Flatiron Constructors and Zachry Construction Corporation, Fluor-Lane South Carolina LLC consortium and Skanska USA Civil Southeast Inc. – to respond to the RFP with final submission date as March 28, 2014. The Fluor-Lane South Carolina LLC consortium includes Fluor Enterprises Inc., The Lane Construction Corporation, HDR Engineering, Inc., and STV Incorporated.

The Alternative Technical Concepts (ATC) are scheduled to be submitted on or before May 23, 2014. While technical proposals are scheduled to be submitted on July 11, 2014, cost proposals were scheduled on July 31, 2014.

In August 2014, a joint venture of Flatiron Constructors and Zachry Construction Corporation was awarded the design-build contract for the project.

Civil Engineering Consultant Services will serve as the primary designer, while Stantec, TYLin, and Mead and Hunt will serve as major sub-consultants for the project.

On August 3, 2015, pre-construction works commenced which involved paving of degraded stretches between Mauldin Road and Woodruff Road and between Pelham Road and the GSP Airport Exit.

On February 5, 2016, construction work commenced.

On December 15, 2016, bridge girder were procured on site for construction of first bridge out of 13 bridges.

On March 07, 2017, Greenville County applied to State Transportation Infrastructure Bank (SIB) for US$168 million for five major road projects that included I-85 and I-385 Interchange Upgrade.

In the fourth quarter of 2017, concrete paving and barrier wall construction completed on the I-385 northbound collector and I-85 southbound collector.

Construction activities are underway and are scheduled for completion by May 2019.
