Summary The Sunderland City Council (SCC) is undertaking the construction of SSTC Bridge project in the UK.
The project involves the construction of a cable stay towers of 180m and 140m height bridge with a deck width of 30m connecting Pallion and Castletown, bridge trusses, embankments, embankments and installation of overhead lights and signals. The project also includes two traffic lanes in each direction alongside, cycle and pedestrian ways.
The new bridge project will provide a direct connection to the City Centre from the A19 and A1231 routes. The new bridge and access roads will have a total length of 3.2km. The project will be backed by the US$128.5 million funding from the Department for Transport.
Stephen Spence Associates Architects won the design competition for the project in 2005.
Techniker, Roughan O Donovan has been awarded as a design consultant for the bridge, Jacobs has been awarded as a design consultant for Highway Structures, landscaping and utilities.
Faithful & Gould has been appointed to provide project management services and Parsons Brinckerhoff has been appointed as the geotechnical consultant for the project.
Corderoy has been appointed as the cost consultant and Sanderson Weatherall has been appointed as the lead consultant for the project.
In December 2009, planning application was submitted to the Department for Transport. The project has secured planning permission in April 2010.
On October 17, 2011, the company invited pre-qualification bids for the EPC Contractor with submission deadline as November 18, 2011. The company has shortlisted five pre-qualified bidders for the project.
In November 2012, four construction companies including Balfour Beatty, Ferrovial, Vinci and Graham Construction were selected as shortlisted bidders.
In November 2012, the Request for Proposal was issued to the four shortlisted bidders on March 20, 2013, as the submission deadline.
In February 2013, the two companies including Balfour Beatty and Ferrovial withdrew voluntarily from the competition.
In March 2013, the submission deadline was extended to April 24, 2013. In April 2013, the submission deadline was later extended to May 22, 2013.
In July 2013, project plans were scrapped due to high cost. However, on July 25, 2013, SCC decided to go back to the drawing board with the new plans.
In May 2014, architect Stephen Spence and structures consultant Technika came up with a design which has two pointy cable stay towers of 180m and 140m height, that curve and taper without any fixed connection.
Originally planned to cost US$196 million, the fancy design has now been dropped which was reduce the cost to US$125 million.
After revision of design, the council has released a prequalification questionnaire (PQQ).
In January 2015, SCC shortlisted three bidders including FCC Construction SA, A joint venture between Northstone (NI) Ltd (‘Farrans’) and Victor Buyck Steel Construction NV and A joint venture between Hochtief (UK) Construction Ltd and Dragados SA for the proposed project.
In May 2015, a joint venture of Farrans and Victor Buyck appointed as contractor.
In December 2015, installation of piles have been completed.
Construction works are underway and expected to be complete by second quarter 2018.
