The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) is undertaking the expansion of an airport in Jeju, South Korea.

The project involves the construction of additional infrastructural facilities to the airport to increase the passenger handling capacity by reducing congestion. It includes the construction of a new runway, a new terminal and related infrastructure, and the installation of ticketing counters, safety and security systems.

On December 5, 2014, MOLIT launched the Jeju Airport Infrastructure Expansion Feasibility Study, in order to ensure airport infrastructure to meet future demand and potentially identify optimal locations for a new airport.

The study activity is being carried out by a consortium from the Korea Aerospace University with an investment value of US$8 million.

The MOLIT conducting studies on whether to expand the existing airport or closing existing airport and constructing a completely new airport with two runways or constructing a second airport at a separate location.

Design activities commenced in November 2015 and were completed in June 2016.

In September 2016, South Korea government committed US$4.2 million of the 2017 state budget to develop New Jeju Airport master plan.

Kumho Construction Co. Ltd has been appointed as the construction contractor.

In November 2016, construction activities commenced and are underway with completion scheduled by the December 2018.
