Summary Oman International Petrochemical Industry Co. LLC (OMPET), a joint venture company formed by Oman Oil Co. (OOC), Korea’s LG International (LGI), and Takamul Investment Co. (TIC) (a subsidiary of OOC), is undertaking the construction of a petrochemical complex in Oman.
The project involves the construction of a petrochemical complex with a capacity to produce 1.1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) and 500,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and being developed in two phases.
It includes the construction of a processing unit, a laboratory, a vacuum chamber, a distillation unit, storage tanks, a splitter unit, a crystal separation unit, material handling facilities, a production unit, an administrative building and infrastructure related facilities.
WorleyParsons has been appointed to undertake the project management consultancy (PMC) services for the EPC Phase.
Technology for PTA and PET production will be supplied by BP Global (BP) and Uhde Inventa-Fischer respectively.
The front-end engineering design (FEED) for PTA and PET plants as well as the utilities and offsite works have been completed.
In December 2014, Sohar Port and Freezone leased a plot of land.
In September 2015, BP and OMPET signed a licensing agreement for BP’s latest generation purified terephthalic acid (PTA) technology for the project.
OMPET started EPC bidding in December 2014, but on July 13, 2015, issued bids to new bidders for the PTA plant with submission deadline as December 2015. Hyundai Engineering and POSCO E & C (POSCO Engineering), Technip, Technomontech and Tecind were selected as bidders. Subsequently, Posco Engineering & Construction., Ltd (Posco) and Sunde Engineering were shortlisted.
In January 2017, POSCO Engineering & Construction Ltd was selected as the preferred contractor and contract was signed in the second quarter of 2017.
Construction works on the PTA plant are underway. The PET (polyester) plant construction will be tendered separately. PTA is a raw material of chemical fiber and PET.
Scope The project involves the construction of a petrochemical complex with a capacity to produce 1.1MTPA of PTA and 500,000TPA of PET in Sohar, Al Batinah region, Oman.
