The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) is undertaking the construction of Bangkok Metro Orange Line in Thailand.

The project involves the construction of a 39.5km metro line. It is planned to be developed in two phases.

The first phase includes the construction of a 21.5km metro line from the Thailand Cultural Center in Huai Khwang district to Min Buri in eastern Bangkok. The second phase includes the line extension of the route by 18km to Taling Chan

The project would be a combination of above- and below-grade stations, MRTA plans to develop 23 underground stations and seven elevated stations along the route.

The project includes the construction of twin tunnels, the installation of rolling stocks, and the laying of railway tracks.

The tunnel is being bored using tunnel boring machine (TBM).

A consortium consisting of MAA Consultants Co., Ltd., Thai Engineering Consultants Co., Ltd, IT International Co., Ltd., Dorsch Consult Asia Co., Ltd and JMI Pacific Ltd was appointed to undertake the feasibility study, EIA, preliminary design, detailed design and tender documents preparation for the project.

MRTA received a fund of a US$2,640 million for the civil engineering work and land expropriation from the government.

In December 2015, MRTA received approvals from the cabinet before completing the environmental assessment.

In April 2016, the Cabinet of Thailand further approved the development plans.

In June 2016, bidding activities have commenced. The project is divided into six contracts.

The US$580 million Contract-I is for the design and construction of tunnels and underground stations from Thailand Cultural Centre to Ramkhamhaeng.

The US$606 million Contract-II is for design and construction of underground stations and tunnels from Ramkhamhaeng to Hua Mark

The US$521 million Contract-III is for design and construction of tunnels, and underground station from Hua Mark to Klong Ban Ma contract

The US$280 million Contract-IV is for the construction of the rail system and terminal upgrade the from Klong Ban Ma to Suvinthawong

The US$137 million Contract-V is for the construction of maintenance center and park & ride facility.

The US$105 million Contract-VI is for design and construction of the 22.50 km rail system from Thailand Cultural Centre to Suwinthawong.

On February 9, 2017, MRTA signed agreements with CKST Joint Venture, which comprises CH Karnchang Plc and Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction Plc for Contract-I, Contract-II, and Contract-V; Italian-Thai Development Plc for Contract-III; and Unique Engineering and Construction Co for Contract-IV and Contract-VI.

In July 2017, construction works commenced.

Construction works are underway and are scheduled to be completed in 2023.
