Summary
National Hydro Power Corporation Ltd (NHPC), Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC), Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (SJVN), Tehri Hydro Development Corp Ltd (THDC) and National Thermal Power Corp Ltd (NTPC) as a joint venture are planning to undertake the construction of Chamkharchhu I hydroelectric power plant project in Zhemgang, Bhutan.

The project involves the construction of a 770MW hydroelectric power plant on 753.12ha of land. It includes the construction of a 108m concrete dam, a substation, transmission line, access roads and a powerhouse, and the installation of turbines and generators.

The Bhutan and India government has signed an agreement to construct the project. According to the agreement, NHPC will undertake the preparation of detailed project report (DPR) on the project at a cost of US$4.4 million.

In February 2011, WAPCOS Ltd was appointed as the environmental consultant for the project. In March 2012, Ministry of External Affairs has directed the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) to assess the financial viability on the project.

In May 2014, CEA approved DPR of the project. In August 2015, The empowered joint group (EJG) has decided to expedite the implementation of the project.

On February 19, 2016, NHPC has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Bhutan government for the development of the project.

Planning activities are underway.
