Mobile Storage Services

The Mobile Storage Services industry has a low level of market share concentration, with the top four companies in the industry, PODS Enterprises LLC, Mobile Mini Inc., U-Haul International Inc. and Waste Management Inc. controlling a moderate grasp of the market. Industry operators in the United States range from small independently run organizations with just a few facilities to major companies with more than 100 locations providing moving services.

Brand recognition drives revenue

• The largest industry operators benefit largely from brand recognition and reputation, resulting in relatively steady consumer demand due to substantial brand loyalty. PODS Enterprises LLC, the industry’s largest player, as well as its subsidiary, Storage Mobility LLC, the nation’s largest PODS franchisee, benefit highly from brand recognition. Mobile Mini Inc., the second-largest industry operator, similarly owns several popular brands, including Evergreen Tank Solutions, Water Movers Inc. and National Storage Containers.

Acquisitions expand top companies’ market share

• Over the five years to 2019, large industry operators have further secured their status by completing a series of small and large acquisitions and mergers. Most notable, PODS Enterprises Inc. (PODS) acquired Storage Mobility LLC in 2014. This acquisition is in line with PODS’ recent move to focus on owning and operating more of its local markets. Additionally, Mobile Mini Inc. merged with Mobile Storage Group Inc. in 2008, exponentially boosting its market share.

Price and service quality drive competition
• Due to the high degree of competition stemming from fellow storage service providers, industry operators must compete on the basis of price, quality of service and location. Industry operators typically charge a flat fee to deliver containers to a client’s home or business, as well as additional fees for picking up and redelivering the item as well as rental costs for storing items. Therefore, the ability to competitively price moving and storage options relative to local competitors is a dominant factor of competition. Quality of service is another important factor in the industry, therefore, companies that can provide timely service with regard to pick-up and delivery times, as well as expanded hours, benefit from a competitive advantage.

This industry provides mobile self-storage services to consumers and commercial customers. This industry is different from the self-storage operators in the Storage and Warehouse Leasing industry (IBISWorld report 53113), in that operators provide customers with door-to-door pickup and delivery.

This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
