Summary
GlobalData’s Construction Intelligence Center (CIC) is currently tracking road related construction projects in the Americas with a total value of US$ 270.5 billion. Of this, US$166.4 billion is in the execution stage and US$43.0 billion is in the planning stage. The US accounts for the highest value with US$115.6 billion, followed by Brazil with projects valuing US$37.8 billion. Canada and Colombia follow with road construction projects with a value of US$27.6 billion and US$26.1 billion respectively. The highest value road projects in the region are the US$8.0 billion Autopista De La Prosperidad Development which involves the construction of a 1,500km highway in Colombia, and the US$5.4 billion Northern Beltline which involves the construction of an 83.6km highway corridor from Interstate 59 to Interstate 459 in Alabama, the US.

The US is the dominant economic market in the Americas, and has the most developed road infrastructure however the Americas Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) estimated that the US had accumulated a US$836 billion backlog of highway and bridge capital investment needs, with US$420 billion of this earmarked for existing highway repairs. Latin America invests 2.8% of its GDP in infrastructure - a low level compared with other developing regions, such as 7.7% for East Asia and the Pacific and 6.9% for the Middle East and North Africa. More than 60% of the region’s roads are unpaved, compared with 46% in emerging economies in Asia and 17% in Europe.
