PTCA balloon catheters can differ in size and material compliance, as each case demands a different type of device. Depending on lesion extension and density, PTCA balloons require specific features, such as lesion-crossing capability, vector force or pressure. For this reason, PTCA balloons can have very advanced features, helping physicians to ensure that the lumen is clear and prepared for a stent deployment. For example, cutting balloons are devices with small blades that can be used for mechanically removing a coronary plaque, and high and low-pressure balloons can aid in the opening of chronic occlusions. Scoring balloons are similar to cutting balloons, but use an abrasive surface instead of blades to mechanically remove plaque from coronary arteries.

Abstract
The first devices used in the field of interventional cardiology were percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) balloon catheters. If not for subsequent restenosis occurrences, they would still be the only device necessary for atherosclerosis treatment. Restenosis was the major problem plaguing interventional cardiology before stents were developed.
