- The outbreak of COVID 19 has resulted in a significant shift in preference for consumers towards the use of contactless payment methods. The number of contactless cards in the country increased from 9.8 million in 2017 to 13.7 million in 2021 at a review-period CAGR of 8.8%. In addition to contactless cards, contactless mobile wallets and wearables are also being used for payments. The growing acceptance of electronic payments at merchant stores has supported the adoption and usage of mobile wallet solutions. To benefit from these factors, Samsung plans to launch Samsung Pay in the Czech Republic during second half of 2021.
- The emergence of digital-only banks and fintechs will further drive the debit card market. Belgium-based Hello bank! is present in the Czech Republic, offering basic, current, and savings accounts free of charge - all of which include debit cards and payment stickers. Meanwhile, UK-based Revolut offers Standard, Premium, and Metal accounts for individuals and the Revolut Business account for businesses, all of which include debit cards. It also offers a Business Metal Card, made of 18 grams of stainless steel and equipped with contactless functionality.
- In order to promote the use of payment terminals among SMEs, in March 2020 the government launched the "Czechia pays by card" program in partnership with Mastercard, Visa, and leading banks such as MONETA Money Bank, Erste Bank, and UniCredit Bank. As part of the program, self-employed individuals and SMEs are offered POS terminals free of charge for six months, which was later extended due to the pandemic.
