This IDC Market Perspective examines U.S. regulators activity around freeing up mid-band spectrum for 5G and provides insight into 5G spectrum portfolios of the leading U.S. mobile network operators. The United States is preparing to auction off mid-band spectrum from both CBRS and C-Band in 2020, filling a conspicuous gap in available bands for 5G usage. "Mid-band spectrum is essential for realizing the potential of 5G, both within the United States and globally," says Jason Leigh, research manager, Mobility and 5G, IDC. "The lack of free and clear spectrum is handicapping the United States' global competitiveness in 5G, as many other countries are launching commercial 5G service with mid-band spectrum. Freeing up mid-band resources to fill the void is critical priority to level the 5G playing field for U.S. 5G participants."
