This IDC Market Perspective provides an update on the China gaming industry in 1H20, with insights about various current trends in the local market. The China gaming industry has benefited greatly from the COVID-19 pandemic as consumers relied on gaming as a source of entertainment while being forced to stay at home. Mobile gaming had benefited greatly from the growth in demand, whereas client-based gaming took a hit because of the forced closure of internet cafes (icafes) during the pandemic. As consumers return to school and/or work, the increased demand for gaming should subside, and demand should return to normal."Although the COVID-19 crisis had a positive impact on the gaming industry in China, the resulting demand growth for gaming will not likely last, and the negative impact on the local economy is likely to carry over into the gaming industry. Technology suppliers and game developers alike should prepare for a market with lowered consumer sentiment and less optimistic environments," says Yexi Liao, research analyst, IDC Asia/Pacific Gaming and Virtual/Augmented Reality.
