"Many communications SPs face the increasing pressure from network commoditization (also known as the dreaded 'dumb pipe' scenario), threatening their potential ROI from 5G. New use cases, such as autonomous driving and vertical industry applications, are driving the shift from centralized to distributed network architectures, and they need new approaches. Communications SPs need an on-demand model for adding capacity that could provide additional network resources as needed. With the advent of 5G, communications SPs are coming to grips with the further changes they need to make to be compliant with the new standards and to position themselves to take advantage of new features. The biggest change is a shift in the approach to virtualization of the network from the adoption of virtual machines to containers," says Shiv Putcha, contributing analyst, IDC Asia/Pacific.
