This IDC Market Perspective discusses composable infrastructure for performance-intensive computing workloads and how VMware and NVIDIA lead ecosystem development. There is a growing urgency for performing mathematically intensive computations on complex and/or large data sets. In most organizations, this urgency is largely driven by digital transformation initiatives that have taken center stage in a post-pandemic world and a hyperfocus on increasing business resiliency by adding newer customer engagement and business delivery models. Unfortunately, many such initiatives fail due to a flawed assumption that general-purpose infrastructure is sufficient and/or underinvestment in dedicated purpose-built infrastructure to host these new workloads. Vendors like NVIDIA and VMware are leading the pack in developing an ecosystem for composable infrastructure systems and reference architectures, which IDC believes will provide the end-to-end scaling needed to deliver the stated outcomes for performance-intensive computing workloads. Suppliers like VAST Data, IBM, Dell, WekaIO, and Pure Storage are enlisting in this ecosystem early on with the goal of addressing the needs of their IT buyers that are now expanding the purview of their infrastructure acquisitions. "This is a high-growth segment of the converged systems market. Today these systems are being delivered as integrated infrastructure (and certified reference architecture systems). IDC expects them to be converted into composable infrastructure systems with the advent of function-offload accelerators," said Ashish Nadkarni, group vice president, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms and Technologies at IDC.
