Mixed signals: As the online radio market begins to approach maturity, industry growth is expected to slow
Abstract
Internet Radio Broadcasting
The Internet Radio Broadcasting industry has experienced strong growth since 2014 due to rising use of smart speakers and internet-connected mobile devices. The industry includes two main revenue sources: the online advertising revenue of established terrestrial (over-the-air) radio stations, and recommendation-based streaming platforms such as Pandora. It does not include on-demand streaming platforms, such as Spotify, that provide users full control over their music selections. Such streaming platforms have presented a growing source of competition for the industry over the past five years. Yet, online listenership has grown as a share of traditional radio broadcasters’ audience, with advertising dollars following. As a result, over the five years to 2019, industry revenue is projected to increase. Over the next five years, the industry is anticipated to continue growing, albeit at a slower rate as online radio begins to approach maturity. However, despite the industry’s overall growth, it has operated at a loss since 2015 and is anticipated to continue in the red over the next five years. The industry competes with corporate- and investor-backed on-demand streaming services that are able to sacrifice short-term profit for long-term gains in market share, and this dynamic is only expected to be exacerbated over the next five years.
Industry operators provide online streaming media distribution, including music and other audio programming. This industry only includes operators that control music recommendation and noninteractive internet radio platforms and generate revenue through subscription and advertising. This industry does not include subscription-based, on-demand online music streaming services.
This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
