Helping hands: The continued aging of the population will boost industry demand

Abstract

Elderly & Disabled Services in the US
The future is bright for the Elderly and Disabled Services industry. Fueled by an aging population, demand for care services for the elderly and people with disabilities has experienced strong growth in demand. Historically, the government has supported institutional care over home- and community-based services through Medicaid reimbursement policies and other regulations. Therefore, a significant portion of those in nursing homes would prefer to receive and would be completely supplied the care they require through a couple hours of daily personalized care in their own homes. In response to this, many state Medicaid programs have expanded funding to better cover the costs of custodial home care. Over the five years to 2023, industry revenue is expected to grow significantly, primarily due to the continued aging of the population. In addition, as states continue to evolve Medicaid coverage to best suit the needs of the US population, coverage for custodial care is expected to increase.

This industry provides outpatient social assistance services to improve the quality of life for the elderly, the mentally ill and people with disabilities. Operators provide services in such areas as day care, nonmedical home care or homemaker services, social activities, group support and companionship. The industry does not include companies that primarily provide medical services or companies that provide overnight housing (e.g. retirement homes).

This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
