This IDC study forecasts the digital PC gaming market worldwide through 2019 along several dimensions. The market is broken down into three key business models: subscriptions, prepaid downloads/add-ons, and freemium or free-to-play titles. The role of digital distributors and online community providers is also considered in some depth. North America is broken out from a combined rest of the world region. The hardcore versus casual digital PC gamer dynamic is additionally explored in the study.

"The number of online PC gamers who regularly play at least one hour per week should approach 700 million by 2019," says Lewis Ward, research director of IDC's Gaming program. "Although smartphone and tablet gaming alternatives are eroding some demand for casual browser games in particular, it's also true that hardcore PC gamers have fallen in love with free-to-play eSports games like CrossFire, Dota 2, League of Legends, and World of Tanks, and so total revenue should grow by nearly 5% a year through 2019."
