Bumpy ride: Industry revenue will likely be constrained by growing competition from foreign operators

Abstract

International Airlines in the US
The International Airlines industry has declined over the five years to 2019 despite rising levels of per capita disposable income and increased travel activity both into and out of the United States. In recent years, mounting competition from government-subsidized foreign competitors and chronic overcapacity within the industry’s cargo transportation segment have forced industry operators to slash ticket prices and reduce freight shipping rates, causing industry revenue to decline. Industry revenue is expected to recover over the coming years as continued growth in disposable income, corporate profit and US travel activity are bolstered by a substantial increase in the price of jet fuel. However, industry revenue will continue to be constrained by growing competition from foreign operators and alternative modes of transportation.

The International Airlines industry provides air transportation to passengers and cargo over regular routes and schedules. These services include any flights that either end or originate internationally. Scheduled air passenger carriers, including commuter and helicopter carriers (except scenic and sightseeing), are included in this industry. Airlines that provide international mail transportation on a contract basis are also included in this industry.

This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
