This IDC study explores the governance framework necessary for establishing and managing an effective enterprise IoT. Constructing a governance framework to manage the IoT is a fundamental first step for CIOs aiming to help their businesses provide meaningful customer experiences in the digital era. An outline for such a framework is proposed in this study, and it may be referenced when formulating an IoT management policy.
This study identifies three key aspects in an IoT governance framework:
- Data transformation chain -- six main stages describing how value is added to data as it is transported from access points to servers and back again
- Policy elements in a method for reconciling the needs of business operations, marketing, customers and third parties
- Necessary expertise in an IT organization along with essential alliances, formed throughout the enterprise, to succeed in the IoT
This study will help CIOs set the strategic milestones of an IoT system deployment plan.
"CIOs able to manage a diverse development ecosystem, influence the direction of industry consortia, and raise the standards of fundamental IoT requirements will preside over the most profitable contextual systems and will more likely ensure their business' successful entry into the digital era," says Adib Carl Ghubril, adjunct analyst with IDC's Research Network.
