This IDC study is a translation of the Japanese document IDC #JPJ42893818. It provides the market forecast and outlook for the Japan software-defined network (SDN) and carrier network functions virtualization (NFV) markets from 2018 to 2022. The Japan SDN and carrier NFV markets are taking off and taking shape. Best practices are established in datacenter SDN and enterprise network SDN, and effective use cases are also becoming clearer for carrier SDN. However, there are concerns over formation of silos in each application area if there are increasing applications of SDN technologies in enterprise network, datacenter, and various areas of WAN.IDC Japan's Group Manager for Communications, Kenichi Kusano, says, "SDN vendors should absolutely avoid silos in SDN in which different SDN controllers and management consoles are necessary for every LAN, WAN, and datacenter. This is because centralized manageability, the fundamental merit of SDN, will be impaired significantly for solutions that require different management screens for every network. When vendors include the solutions of acquired vendors in their SDN portfolios, they should at least integrate the management consoles before launching the product in the market."
