This IDC study provides a summary of an interview conducted in June 2015 with Epicor for discussing the company's transition from a solely on-premises software provider to one with a choice of customer deployment models. Epicor, founded in 1972 and headquartered in Austin, Texas, is privately held and reports annual revenue of about $900 million. The company focuses on industry-specific business software for the manufacturing, retail, distribution, and services industries. Epicor has over 20,000 customers in 150 countries and offers solutions in 30 languages. Its flagship products are Epicor ERP and Epicor Cloud ERP."Keeping customers happy in the world of mission-critical operations software is a matter of understanding both what they have in common and what makes them unique," says Robert Mahowald, group vice president, Applications and Cloud Business Models at IDC. "Understanding the industry-specific life cycles and changing fortunes and business needs of midmarket buyers in key industries is essential to selling to them and serving them well. And providing choice of deployment model, in a way that does not hurry customer decisions or penalize them, shows an understanding that each one will have a slightly different risk profile and a slightly different IT philosophy and will be at a different stage in their cloud journey."
