The popularity of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is continually growing as the utilization of MIS hasresulted in reduced patient stays and costs, which have been accompanied by improvements in operatingroom efficiency. To view the operating field during an MIS procedure, a surgeon uses a surgical camera incombination with an endoscope, which is inserted into the patient. Still images and videos from theseendoscopic cameras and from overhead cameras are then captured by an image capture and recordingdevice. This allows images and videos from an operation to be reviewed at a later date. As a result, mostimage capture devices are bought as a platform coupled with a surgical camera and a surgical light source.There is a wide range of products offered by the various players in this market. Very basic systems aremuch lower in cost and have the ability to record images in HD; however, they cannot record video in HDand have no integration ability.Mid-level devices are able to record all input in HD and can be connected to patient information systems,which can tie in the new images with hospital records. These systems are usually customizable, so usuallythe need of the hospital will determine the price range as a result of the number of features associated withthe device.More advanced systems offer additional features such as dual channel recording (so two different imagingsystems can be recorded at the same time), DICOM and PACS compatibility and secure wireless systemconnectivity within hospitals. One feature that is becoming more prominent with these systems is theirability to share pictures to secure applications on tablets so physicians are able to view them at any pointwithout relying on hard physical copies. The physician also has the ability to edit and manipulate theimages.
