Summer break: Despite rises in high school retention rates, industry demand will likely decline

Abstract

For-Profit Universities in the US
The For-Profit Universities industry includes colleges and universities that offer academic courses at baccalaureate and graduate levels on a for-profit basis. Over the five years to 2019, the industry has experienced a significant decline as operators have garnered lawsuits and negative press for providing less-than-adequate education to students. Prior to the current period, high unemployment encouraged individuals to return to school, bolstering industry revenue growth. However, demand for industry services fell as the unemployment rate decreased, encouraging many consumers to pursue full-time employment instead of enrolling in industry courses. Moving forward, unless operators can adequately respond to heightened regulation regarding Title IV funding and better business habits, the industry will continue to shrink and more establishments will shut down. However, as the national unemployment rate is forecast to increase over the five years to 2024 and the levels of high school retention and per capita disposable income are expected to rise, the industry will likely to rebound at a modest pace.

The For-Profit Universities industry includes colleges and universities that offer academic courses at baccalaureate or graduate levels on a for-profit basis. This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
