Precious Metals and Diamond Mining in Canada to 2023

Summary
Canada is one of the largest mineral producers globally, producing more than 60 metals and minerals including coal, iron ore, copper, lead, zinc, gold, silver, nickel, chromium, manganese, diamond, uranium and platinum. The country’s mineral production was valued at an estimated US$36.4bn (CAD47bn) in 2018.

Canada is one of the world’s main producers and exporters of precious metals. The country’s gold production increased by 14.2% to 6.9 million ounces in 2018. Production from newly commenced operations such as Pretium Resources’ Brucejack, Hope Bay, Moose River Consolidated (MRC) and the Rainy River mines aided this growth. In addition, during the same year, Canadian silver mine production reached an estimated 12.5 million ounces.

Production of rough diamonds went up by 7.9% in 2018, as production increased from the Ekati Diamond, Gahcho Kue and the Victor mines, completely offsetting a 2% decline from the Diavik mine. However, the domestic platinum production plunged by 9.5% due to a 22.7% and 4.6% decline in production from Glencore and Vale operations.

During the mid of April 2019, Newmont Mining Corporation, concluded the US$10bn takeover of Canada’s Goldcorp to form the world’s largest gold mining company, Newmont Goldcorp Corporation. Canada will be the largest production base for Newmont Goldcorp, which will account for up to 44% of the total gold projects the new company owns.

In addition to Newmont Goldcorp, Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd, Vale SA, Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd, Glencore Plc, and Imperial Metals Corporation are some of the largest mining companies operating in the Canadian precious metal and diamond industry.
