Fertiberia a chemical and fertilizer Division of Grupo Villar Mir (GVM) in a joint venture with Fertial (owned by Asmidal, a subsidiary of Sonatrach) are developing the El Bahia fertilizer plant near Arzew in Algeria.

The project involves the construction of huge nitrogen manufacturing facility with production capacity of 1.1 million tonnes per annum (MMTPA) of ammonia, a production unit, storage facilities, administrative buildings, office facilities, transportation facilities, warehouses, access roads, parking facilities and other related facilities

Initially, the project was announced in 2007, due to disputes with the joint venture partners the project was delayed.

In May 2014, Grupo Fertiberia and Fertial signed a project revival agreement.

On October, 2015 Sonatrach and Oman’s Suhail Bahwan Group Holding had signed a partnership contract to build a fertilizer plant in Arzew.

The project is in the process of finding out an exact location for the facility near the coastal city of Arzew.

Planning activities are underway.
