Summary
The Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland (DoTMR) is planning to construct a light rail line in Queensland, Australia.

The project involves the construction of 23km light rail network connecting Maroochydore to Caloundra via Kawana, which will be constructed in two phases. The first phase worth US$1,120 million will be constructed from Maroochydore to Kawana, and the second phase from Kawana to Caloundra at a cost of US$606 million.

The project includes the construction of stations and interchanges, the installation of the signaling system, rolling stock, electrical and mechanical equipment, safety and security system, and the laying of rail tracks.

The project team includes Conlon Birrell Landscape Architects as a master planner, Arup as a planning consultant, Donald Cant Watts Corke as route and cost consultant and KPMG as a commercial advisory service provider for the project.

In 2012, the first phase pre-feasibility study and rapid economic appraisal works were completed.

On August 23, 2012, Sunshine Coast City Council (SCCC) considered the findings of the first phase pre-feasibility study and determined that the project should proceed to a second phase full feasibility study.

In 2013, SCCC completed the initial round of feasibility studies.

In October 2014, SCCC released the feasibility study, calling it the best option for building a public transport backbone for the region.

In November 2014, SCCC released route options for the proposed light rail system from Maroochydore to Caloundra and community consultation occurred for the same.

As of February 2018, SCCC is undertaking a feasibility study for a light rail system between Maroochydore and Caloundra. Depending on feasibility study and funding arrangements, construction on stage one between Maroochydore and Kawana could commence in 2022 with the train running by 2025.
