Athi Water Services Board (AWSB) is planning to undertake the Murang’a to Githika River water pipeline project in Kenya.

The project involves the construction of an 11.7km long, 3.0 diameter main water tunnel from Maragua intake to Githika outfall. pipeline.

The project includes construction of three intakes and diversion weirs on Rivers Maragua, Gikigie and Irati, 40m drop shaft, two adits 270m and 740m long, tunnel Outfall on River Githika, construction of concrete weirs 4m in height, construction of storage tanks, water Treatment Plant, the water transmission pipelines of capacity of 140,000m3 per day, pumping stations and related infrastructure, and the installation of equipment.

It also includes other erosion protection works in perennial rivers subjected to regular flood events, and work output for bulk earthworks is 320,000m3 and for concrete works is 120,000m3.

AWSB has appointed Egis/MIBP JV as feasibility study consultant and M/s GIBB as the Environmental Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) Study consultant.

In 2012, Egis/MIBP JV carried out the Feasibility Study and Master Plan for Developing for the project.

In Q4 2013, design activities completed on tunnel.

AWSB submitted the ESIA report to National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA).

In March 2014, bidding was carried out through International Competitive Bidding (ICB) for the construction contractor.

On September 1, 2014, AWSB has awarded US$13 million construction contract for the tunnel to China Ghezouba Construction Company.

The project will be funded by the World Bank, Africa Development Bank, and KfW Germany

On January 21, 2015, AWSB held a public consultative forum to give an outline of the project.

On February 9, 2015, NEMW issued the license for the construction of the tunnel.

Construction works are underway and scheduled to complete in 2018.
