Summary
Gibraltar Electricity Authority (GEA) is undertaking the construction of a liquid natural gas power station in Gibraltar.

The project involves the construction of an 80MW natural gas power plant.

It includes the construction of a substation, a powerhouse, LNG storage tanks and related facilities, the installation of transformers, six 14-cylinder generator turbine units and safety systems, and the laying of transmission lines.

The tenders were invited in the first quarter of 2013, with a submission deadline on August 1, 2013.

On December 11, 2014, Bouygues Energies & Services awarded the contract to design, build and supply equipment for the project. The contract also includes a US$3 million, operational and maintenance agreement for first 12 months after completion.

On January 20, 2015, Bouygues Energies & Services signed an agreement with GEA for the turnkey contract. The contract also includes the supply of six 14-cylinder turbines weighing 300 tonnes each, civil engineering, procurement of electrical and mechanical components, incorporation of a heat recovery system for exhaust gases, commissioning of the entire power plant, including testing, and connecting it to the grid.

In February 2015, MAN Diesel & Turbo was awarded the gas and dual fuel engines supply contract. It will supply and commission three 14V51/60G gas and three 14V51/60DF dual-fuel engines.

Environmental Gain Ltd. (Engain) has been appointed as study consultant by Bouygues to draft the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project. Belilos has been appointed as an engineering consultant.

In August 2015, EIA was granted by Government of Gibraltar’s Development and Planning Commission (DPC).

On October 19, 2015, construction activities commenced.

In December 2017, construction activities on the first two of five LNG storage tanks were completed.

Construction activities are underway and are scheduled to be complete by the first quarter of 2018.
