Telefónica CEO, José María Álvarez-Pallete López noted at the company’s recent analyst event that today’s fast-moving technology trends often blur the frontiers between products and services. Only a few years ago, for example, mobile phones, cameras and TV sets were separate devices. Today, however, they are integrated into a single product. Similarly, platform services such as Uber and Airbnb are now synonymous with transport and lodging, respectively. Facebook and Google are other examples of platform companies within the advertising sector, which are synonymous with social networking and searching.
